Gilbert was born in Glasgow in 1939. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1957-1962 under William Armour and David Donaldson. From 1962-1988 he taught in schools in Aberdeenshire, Glasgow and Fife, and left teaching in 1989 to become a full-time artist. Along with his wife Lesley, he set up the Coutryard Gallery in Crail, exhibiting contemporary Scottish Art from 1993-2001. Gilbert now lives and works in Pittenweem, where he paints townscapes and seascapes around Easr Neuk, along with still life and interiors. He has held numerous solo exhibitions and is an elected member of the RSW, SAAC and Paisley Art Institute.
